It was founded in 79AD when the Romans built a settlement called Mancunium on the River Irwell. This later became Manchester and the county that bears its name grew from it. Whilst it is assumed by many that Greater Manchester is an urban sprawl it does in fact have its fair share of green belt and includes some of the most affluent areas in the country.
